Rhode Island Medicare Assistance
Who should use this?
People turning 65 or new to Medicare, people already enrolled in Medicare who need help choosing or changing plans and caregivers helping someone with Medicare.
The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free, unbiased, one on one help to Rhode Islanders who are eligible for Medicare, as well as their families and caregivers. Counselors can help you understand Medicare options, enrollment periods, supplemental plans, and cost saving programs.
The Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging (OHA) administers SHIP, which helps individuals understand their Medicare options and find coverage that fits their needs and budget. SHIP also assists people with limited income in applying for programs such as Medicaid, the Medicare Savings Program, and Extra Help/Low Income Subsidy to help reduce health care costs.
Commercial/Marketplace Insurance
Who should apply?
People who do not have affordable health insurance through a job, family member, or public program.
HealthCare.gov is the official federal Health Insurance Marketplace. You can compare and enroll in commercial health plans, see if you qualify for financial help, and apply for coverage through this site. It is the trusted government resource for Marketplace insurance and any related subsidies.
HealthSource RI is Rhode Island’s official health insurance marketplace. It helps residents compare and enroll in affordable, high-quality health coverage and is the only place to access tax credits that can lower the cost of insurance. If you don’t have coverage through an employer or family member, HealthSource RI can help you find a plan that fits your needs and budget.
Rhode Island Medicaid Assistance
Who should apply?
Low-income individuals and families, children, pregnant individuals, older adults, and people with disabilities.
Rhode Island Department of Human Services (RI DHS) administers Medicaid (RIte Care) for eligible Rhode Islanders. The agency helps individuals and families apply for, renew, and manage Medicaid coverage, providing access to affordable health care for those who qualify.
